Rev. Dr. Sky Kershner is the Executive Director of the Kanawha Pastoral Counseling Center in Charleston, West Virginia, and has been with the Center since 1989.
He also serves as the Pastoral Leader at Unity of Kanawha Valley Church on Bridge Road, and is adjunct clinical faculty at WVU School of Medicine, Department of Behavioral Medicine.
Sky is a recipient of the State of West Virginia’s Civil Rights Award, and was a speaker at the WV State Martin Luther King Jr celebration in 2014.
In 2010, Sky appeared on the Discovery Studios show “Hoarders,” portraying his therapeutic work with a WV family. Sky was profiled in the Charleston Daily Mail in 2014.
Sky coordinates the monthly meetings of the Charleston Area Interfaith Religious Leaders Clergy Association. He is on the President Elect of the Rotary Club of Charleston and is on the Advisory Board is Cafe a le Fikr.
Sky is known in the Charleston area for his work as a pastoral counselor and therapist, his work on Interfaith initiatives, his care of workers after industrial disasters, and for his many presentations to professional, community, and corporate groups on stress, grief, spirituality, and communication.
Sky is passionate about his life’s work: to help people have better relationships with themselves and with others, Sky sees understanding and acceptance as core values of his ministry.
Sky has degrees from Dickinson College, Drew University, Yeshiva University in NYC, and Andover Newton Theological Seminary in Boston. He is a Supervising Diplomate in the American Association of Pastoral Counseling, a Supervisor for the American Association of Marital and Family Therapy, and a certified trainer in Critical Incident Stress Management.
Sky was born in Washington DC, and grew up in Pennsylvania. He has lived in Thailand, Germany, Maine, New Jersey, and New York City before settling in West Virginia. Sky lives in Charleston with his wife, Maria Leon Kershner, a native of Costa Rica. Maria is a preschool teacher at Mountaineer Montessori. Sky and Maria have two children, David, age 13, and Maria Celeste, age 11.
